I’m in the process of (slowly) wrapping up my Photo 365 project on deviantArt. Since it has been over a year since I started it (more on that in a moment), I wanted to begin something new. Using Tumblr, I’m embarking on another year-long journey, primarily to explore writing with a post a day. I’m going to leave this a bit vague, as I can see where a photograph, a sketch, or even a hyperlink might best express the thoughts of the moment, and I don’t think there’s much value in limiting myself to just words.
As of this date (April 24th) I haven’t finished my Photo 365. I have about 300 or so photos posted currently, which puts me “behind” by roughly two months. If the success of the project was just about having put up a picture a day, I have failed. If I measure total quantity vs time, I performed a bit better, earning about an 82%, which is a low B, making it “passing” but still not “wildly successful.”
Some folks might cut their losses and move on. Others might start over. I shall finish posting 365 photographs, because as a project defined by numbers, it is about quantity. But it’s also about quality, so I shall take a bit longer to bring it to conclusion. Of course, that’s no reason not to start something new. Hence, this blog.
I started this blog on the 18th of April. I’ve already managed to miss posting on two days. So I’ve already failed, not even a week out of the gates. Unless I choose a new start date, I won’t be able to say “I did this every day for a year!” at the end of it all, and I have to say that I’m okay with that.
Being able to say “I did it for 365 days straight” might be impressive in the right circles, but it is an idea which holds no value for me. What is more important is the notion of posting every day for a year, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, and accepting both gracefully. There are lessons in both, and both are parts of the journey.
It’s my brother’s birthday today. I’m enjoying a Mexican apple soda in celebration. When we were kids, we used to get apple sodas from Mr. Fan’s store down the street from our apartment in Taipei. Barrilitos brand is the best, but the grocery store didn’t have any, so I’m drinking Topo Sabores. Here’s to you, little brother.
